As someone who years ago signed on and paid for an introductory  
correspondence class from the geshe's Asian Classics Institute, which  
seemed to offer some kind of "geshe equivalency" program based on non- 
proctored open book exams and optional telephone guidance from a  
volunteer (who did not sound especially eager to offer assistance the  
one time that I called), I have had a somewhat strange feeling about  
Geshe Michael Roach.  His decision to refer to his geshe-ship as  
"equivalent to a Doctor of Divinity" is very strange, for starters,  
given that the D.D. is an honorary degree and generally requires no  
academic study.
