The cats are probably just humoring them and sneeking out for mice-burgers 
on the quiet.  Otherwise the cats definitely would not be healthy -- they 
are obligate carnivores, unlike us.  They need meat to derive taurine which 
they cannot synthesize for themselves, like us with vitamin C.   Perhaps 
your friends know this and give manufactured supplements instead. Without 
taurine,  they sicken and fade away.
