Actually, the main thing that precipitated hostilities was the fact that
Japan and the US were both engaged simultaneously in Imperialist
expansionism into the same part of the world. Jack Reed actually put it
much more eloquently and succinctly (or at least "he" did according to
the portrayal of him in the movie "Reds") when asked to deliver a speech
on the causes of WWI (which was still going on at the time). He stood up
and said "Profits", and then sat back down. The same thing was true
although the details differed slightly in WWII.
