Hi Richard,

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a sodomite is a "Person 
practising sodomy; inhabitant of Sodom".  Sodomy is "copulation between male 
persons; unnatural connection between human beings and animals."

As mentioned, sphinxes are a combination of man and animal, blending both 
Sodomite desires into one.  If it were sphinxes flapping overhead, what 
self-respecting Sodomite could resist that?!
