I did not ask John Huntington if he's still a member of Buddha-L or not, 
when he called my attention to

the Gandharvas, and their wives the Apsaras ... [who] provide celestial

I appreciate the other suggestions, incl. Garuda, winged humanoids depicted 
in the caves of western China ... etc.

Actually am interested in imagery alternative to winged humanoids -- E.G., 
transparent humanoids floating in luminescent orbs. (Or the illustrator on 
the project is)
