Peter D. Junger wrte:

+AD4- As I understand the argument, the Germanic speakers did not invade
+AD4- England but were rather brought over, with their families, by the
+AD4- Romans to serve as soldiers, etc. They were left behind when the
+AD4- Romans pulled out and it was those Germanic speakers who were left
+AD4- holding the highest class jobs, or, at least, the jobs in the
+AD4- cities. And they encouraged their cousins to come over as traders.
The current archeological record does not support this picture although that
is not to deny the presence of some foederati in Britain. The fuction of
the so-called Saxon shore forts has been re-evaluated and they are now
thought to have been storage centres for trade. There is also apparently no
evidence for a take-over of high-status jobs either.

+AD4- Thus, though there was no invasion, DNA studies should show that
+AD4- they replaced the Celtic Britains where it counted.
But they do not despite increasing DNA studies of the English/Welsh
population.

Best wishes,
Stephen Hodge
