Required reading for this topic is V.S. Ramachandran's Phantoms
in the brain: probing the mysteries of the human mind, which has
quite a lot on epilepsy and "enlightenment" experiences, as well as on
bipolar disorder and religious experiences of various kinds. As many of
you will know, Ramachandran is one of the best science writers around
and is very good at exploring mysteries rather than explaining them
away.
