Tiantai argued to think of buddha-nature as soley pure and good is
one-sided, dualistic. It has some evil in it, in order to stay related to
and understand the suffering and ignorance of sentient beings. Hurvitz' book
on Chih-I gives a good basic account of this. For a more challenging
version, see Brook Ziporyn's book on Chih-li, _Evil and/or/as the Good:
Omnicentrism, Intersubjectivity, and Value Paradox in Tiantai Buddhist
Thought_.
Incidentally it is impossible to understand Dogen without coming to terms
with this.
