I never knew this for sure, but always assumed that people found it
offensive. (If they don't, they damn well should!) I suppose it provokes
about the same reaction as when people refer to citizens of the USA as
Yankees (or Yanks). As a matter of curiosity, what expression is not
offensive when one wants to refer collectively to people who live in
Great Britain?

Don't mind Dan. Derogation is the only rhetorical mode he knows.

Some might find the term "idiot" offensive. (That's probably why you
used it, I would guess.) How about refering to such people as "those who
are not as eager as I to take offence at everything Americans say" or
simply "people with whom I disagree or from whose tastes mine differ"?
