'zen' is almost a four-letter word, 'koan' is; 'buddhism' consists  of more.

PS: The exchanges have been interesting and informative for the most part.  I 
am ambivalent about 'zen'. It does seem to be an imaginary construct which is 
 helpful to some individuals, a portion of whom frustrate the hell out of 
sincere  beings in the world. 
 
Thus, some attitudes seem unchanging, though I know  better.
