Many of my students have found Richard Gombrich's revision of Coulson's text 
very helpful. Another, more recent, text is Dennis Waite (2005), 
_An_Essential_Guide_To_Sanskrit_; New Delhi, Black and White. More of my 
beginning students have found this offering very useful.
