Dear Colleagues,

we are inviting abstracts for a panel about Phyag
chen/Mahaamudraa, to be held at the International
Association of Tibetan Studies in Bonn, 2006 (full
description below). If interested, please send
750-word abstract to: Roger Jackson
(rjackson at carleton.edu) and Lara Braitstein
(lara.braitstein at mcgill.ca).

Phyag rgya chen po (Mahaamudraa) is a multivalent term
which may refer, inter alia, to the culmination of the
tantric path, the ultimate nature of reality, and a
system of meditation. Though most closely associated
with Bka' brgyud traditions, it has a place in many
important Tibetan systems of theory and praxis, and
has, over the centuries, figured prominently in
meditative discourse, philosophical disputation, and
inspired poetry. This panel seeks to explore Phyag
chen from a variety of perspectives, including (but
not limited to) questions of: the transmission of
Mahaamudraa/Phyag chen to Tibet, the construction of a
Phyag chen "tradition" in Tibet, views of Phyag chen
within and across sectarian boundaries, philosophical
disputes about Phyag chen, and political,
sociological, aesthetic, and/or ritual aspects of
Phyag chen discourse and practice.
